Facts and Footnotes

Golden Bay is a rural community with the main township being Takaka. The population of Golden Bay is approximately 3,678, including approximately 500 residents in Takaka.

The main township of Takaka has 25 commercial buildings, including 1 supermarket, 2 petrol stations, 1 cinema, 1 information centre, 2 real estate agents, 2 pubs, 1 restaurant and 4 cafes.

There are 4 primary schools and 1 high school in Golden Bay. The Takaka Police Station has 3 full time officers who service the Golden Bay region and there is a central fire service run by a volunteer force. The hospital is located in East Takaka, and there are medical centres located in Takaka and Collingwood townships. The Tasman District Council and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries both have offices in Takaka.

Sheep, dairy and deer farming are the main industries in the area. Other primary industries include fishing, retail, arts and crafts and tourism. During the summer period the population increases due to visitors; with the total number of visitors for the period January-March 2008 being 20,730.

Dog or Deer ?

Is it a dog or is it a deer? That depends on what time of the year you see this Takaka icon .....

Sometime in early December every year this dog disguises himself as a raindeer to celebrate the Christmas season. You may catch sight of him just before you enter the Takaka township, on your right.
