Puponga Farm Park is one of only a few places in New Zealand where the Department of Conservation has set up an active farm on conservation land. You may wander freely over this area, please use the stiles and follow any instructions in lambing season. You can walk to Fossil Point, at the ocean beach, or along the spectacular Hilltop walk to Wharariki via Pillar Point and Cape Farewell.

The starting point for exploring these beach and farm walks is literally the car park at the ‘end of the road'. Public vehicles are not allowed past here. Vehicle access to Farewell Spit is by organised tour concessionaires only. Visitors will be pleased to find that perched here on the hill- top is a cafe providing a wonderful panoramic view of both farm and spit, together with a series of displays describing the area's features.

There is plenty of information on how best to explore and enjoy this marvellous area, and of course the refreshments to be tasted.

nearby is .....

Pillar Point Lighthouse

There is a vigorous 30 minute walk to this exposed coastal high point from the road at Wharariki Saddle. It is the site of New Zealand's first radar station and provides great views over the starkly bare hills nearby, with the immense sweep of Farewell Spit to the east and the smooth green farmland of Wharariki to the west.
